Mawson Reunion 2010

In 1985 twenty-eight intrepid people spent 12 months together in a remote, freezing, windy outpost of society - the Australian Antarctic scientific research station of Mawson.

The year 2010 will be the official 25th reunion of the group. In an act of perverse logic, usual with Antarctic expeditioners, the reunion is being held in one of the warmest places in Australia, the tropical village of Yeppoon, on the central Queensland coast. Gone will be the layers of woollen clothing, the heavy outdoor boots, the windproof ventiles and the thick Antarctic gloves. Instead the clothing will be tropical shirts, summer hats, grass skirts, leis and lots of sunscreen.

The reunion is being held at the home of the 1985 station leader, Ted Upton, and his wife Linda. Easily accessible from the reunion site is the fabulous tropical getaway of Great Keppel Island. Families are very welcome. Accommodation will be tents at Ted and Linda's place, or nearby Bed and Breakfasts or Motels.

It is expected that the reunion will be held in July or August of 2010, so that expeditioners may still attend the annual midwinter dinner in their home state in June. Check out the photos of the reunion site below, and also a list of who's coming so far. For more details, or to register your interest in attending, contact Robyn Downey or Ted Upton.
