| What's creativity?

More or less?
To bring into being. That's what the word creativity means in the dictionary. In the order of things, pottery is not very important. The emphasis given to productivity and newness is over valued. There are many other priorities in the world, non less than living without violence. The price of happiness
Creativity, like discovery or invention, can become confused with solving problems. In the search for health, peace and happiness, pottery may seem a good solution. It offers to some people a therapeutic activity, a recuperative leisure time, or a purposeful and meaningful vocation. The shrink test.
Pottery, painting a picture, playing music, all of these activities offer a respite from our problems. But do they solve anything? No, they are just activities. Whether for business or pleasure, they are activities in the ordinary day to day scheme of things. Making things can be enjoyable and fulfilling, but are they creative?

Reactions to art.
The process of creativity can not be self-conscious nor self-seeking. While pottery, like other arts, can be instrumental in the understanding of creativity, to understand the problem, is a persons' first need. The question is, is there creativity without the articles of the activity, the design and ornamentation? This proposal is not meant as a reaction to novelty, color or decoration. It is meant for the primary understanding of the values of creativity and an un-adorned art. Clear away the cobwebs.
Can the creative process be made so clear? Such an activity, without emphasis or expectation in design or motif, is truly creative. What is brought into being is free of the petty influences and so is filled with the wonders of a world largely ignored, forgotten, or denied. This is not some kind of austere discipline of design which is challenging to most ideas about art and craft. Stop,look and listen.
In fact to many people a natural, intuitive, and simple style is already known and practiced. But for the person who is interested in refining their pottery, what can be done to start from a beginning, without the past? The challenge is to acknowledge the cluttered present.

Self centred
There are many suggestions on offer. Mostly the advice is centred on the notion that one must make an effort to curtail, if not abolish, the self, or the ego. This is a harsh and unnecessary abandonment of common values. A bit of thinking is required. For example, individuality is taken to be each person asserting their difference. What do we make of the desire for people to be like everyone else? Individuality can be the expression to be the same. The same conflicts arise in either situation. The renewal process is not a reorganization, a change of management, a renaming, or outlawing, or banishment. Nor do we need to do something new or different.
Creativity is a shared relationship for the potter and the things pottered. It's the potter who needs to be creative.
