Own Root
Old Garden Roses

There is great value in a plant that can actually grow on it's own roots!
So many modern roses have been so highly manipulated by man
that they can no longer survive without grafting them onto
another plant's root system.

Old Garden Roses grown on their own roots make strong and vigorous plants!
They will not suffer from graft rejection as they age and will live very long lives.
There is no suckering from the grafted root stock.
Because the plant grows from it's own roots, if something were to damage the top
of the plant, it will grow right back from it's roots.

As a hobby, each year I propagate some Old Garden own root roses.

I choose only plants that I grow in my own garden that have
proven to be of exceptional garden value.
This means they are disease resistant, especially for black spot.
I want good form, a plant that looks great in the garden,
with ample leafy growth and a pleasing shape.
They need to be easy to care for, not requiring a lot of pruning,
and growing happily with manure and mulch.
They have to be heat loving, performing though summer
and not burning in intense sun.
Frequency and the amount of bloom are also important to me,
but never at the expense of general garden worthiness.

I offer limited numbers of own root roses for sale all year.

These plants are well rooted in 2.5lt containers.
I indicate on my  Rose List  plants that are currently available.

If you do not see a rose I grow listed as available,
I often have younger started plants that can be reserved
until they are ready.  Next roses will be ready
in summer 2008/09.

All roses are grown without the use of chemicals.

Own root roses can be sent by mail as potted plants.
