My breeding experience with Red Tailed Black Cockatoos
(Page 2 of 3)

When the chick was taken away from the parents, it was weighed, photographed, then placed in a 10 ltr bucket with wood shavings as bedding, then brought inside with no heating applied to it at all. To start the chick off with food, we used an old, but a proven non commercial formula, this is made up of the following ingredients, Pal puppy biscuits, smooth apple sauce, peanut butter, & Heinz baby mixed vegetables. My wife mixes up the formula exactly the same way as she does for any other seed eating species that we have, and up to date we have had no loses on this formula.

Although I have no doubt that the chick would have thrived on this formula, my wife made the decision to change the formula, just to be on the save side, to another one used by a good friend of mine, this person has hand raised many Black Cockatoos, so his formula is a proven one on that particular species. As seen in the photos, the chick is fed via a bent up table spoon, this is done for all our bird species we hand raise.

The chick was fed four times a day to start with, the times being 6am, 11am, 4pm, & 10pm. This was done for the next 5 weeks until the chick was 8 weeks of age, then reduced to 3 times a day, with the new times of 8am, 3pm, & 10pm, but

with the amount of formula given of course increased. Donna has told me that this species of bird is very easy to hand feed, and is enjoying feeding such a magnificent cockatoo.

The times I have filled in for her I have also noticed what a pleasure it truly is, to have total control over such a fine creature is a great experience in it self and a massive step in aviculture for us here at Donpaulna Aviaries.
