A Bird Trip to Remember (Page 3 of 9)

The other species are bred in fully indoor areas, in much smaller cages, fully tiled with artificial lighting. Joes collection of birds is as follows, 40 pairs of African Greys, 20 pairs of Amazon Parrots consisting of 5 species, Mealy,s, Blue Fronted, Yellow Naped, Yellow Fronted, & Double Yellow Headed, 12 pairs of Macaws, Green Wings, Scarlets, and Blue & Golds, 10 pairs of Jardine Parrots, 10 pairs of Senegal Parrots, 3 pairs of Umbrella Cockatoos, and 3 pairs of Lesser Cockatoos. Joe informed me that the birds he breeds are the best for him to sell as companion birds. (For example, the types of Amazons he breeds are not as aggressive as the other species in his opinion). He also informed me that he had lost 40% of his African Greys, Jardine & Senegal Parrots through Beak & Feather Decease, this was done by buying birds in from an unknown supplier, After months of heartache he is finally rid of the decease, but he states it cost him a small fortune. All his aviaries are gas heated through the flooring, this is very expensive, there fore birds must be bred to compensate for the cost. All the large flight aviaries have two sections to them, an inside and an outside area, the birds are kept in the inside section for the winter months for obvious reasons. At the moment Joe is rebuilding part of his complex, and adding on another large bird room. Because of his problem with Beak & Feather Decease, and whilst he is rebuilding, all his eggs are taken from the parent birds and given to one of his friends, who incubates them, hatches them, and looks after them until they are around two weeks of age. After this they are returned to Joes complex to be finished off, then sold as companion birds to hospitals and to the general public.

THE PARROT INN, THE NETHERLANDS: The next day I was lucky to be invited by Joe to visit the Foundation Dutch Parrot Refuge (The Parrot Inn), which is located in Veldhoven, which is around 80kms North of Eindhoven. This 80,000 sq meter park has of 250

cages & aviaries, housing over 2000 birds, which include, Macaws, Amazons, most White Cockatoos, African Greys, some large water bird & bird of prey species. It also boosts the largest parrot aviary of its kind in the world with a surface area of 2500sq meters, this massive aviary was built in 1997. The park has a nice collection of
