Keeping Asiatic Parrots (Page 2 of 2)

People who are thinking on keeping and hopefully breeding Asiatic parrots must consider the environment they are to be kept in. In my opinion aviary space is somewhat of a decision to make, but the biggest decision is the amount of noise some of these birds may cause towards close neighbours. In my cause having a double block, my neighbours are at a handy distance, but for people with close boundaries you may have a bit of a problem. Although my Plum heads, Slatey heads, and Alexandrines make minor noise, my Moustache parrots are very noisy birds indeed. There loud calls I must admit will definitely push some people to the limits. In my collection I claim that both the Eclectus and Moustache parrots are by far the noisiest of all.

CONCLUSION: I can only comment on the Asiatics I keep, so although Moustache parrots can be somewhat noisy they like their relatives are very attractive parrots to keep in any collection. Asiatic parrots are easy to house and keep, and can be reasonable breed and sold.

Their babies can be left with the parents without much problems, but hand reared birds such as the Alexandrine parrot makes an excellent pet, either for a family pet or a companion bird, and can be taught to talk without any problems. In our experience they stay very tame and do not get nippy. Asiatics are kept around the country by all sorts of aviculturists, so if you are a beginner and considering getting into these parrots, please give it plenty of thought before buying and I’m sure you wont be disappointed in choosing this line of bird.

Yours in aviculture: Paul Stevens.

NOTE: We no longer keep this species of Asiatic Parrot here at DONPAULNA AVIARIES.
