We
at Donpaulna Aviaries
strive hard
to keep our birds in tip top condition, and do our utmost to hand rear
our young birds to be as gentle as possible. We do not keep or breed
birds for a living, but as a hobby, which, we take very seriously. I
started in birds, mainly parrots, when I was a small boy still living
at home with my parents, with my wife getting interested in them, of
course, when we met over 20 years ago. My partner (and wife ), Donna has the
tiring job of doing all the hand rearing with the help of our daughter
Ashley. Donna has to be one of the most dedicated carer of birds I have
met, and looks after each and every one of our birds and their young,
with loving care. We believe in only using a spoon for hand rearing our
birds as we feel this brings the birds closer to human contact, and
does not bring unnecessary losses of young birds. This is
only our belief and maybe not the belief of others.
AVIARIES:
All seed eaters are
kept in conventional aviaries with all nectar eaters kept in suspended
cages. We like to see our seed eaters playing on the ground of the
aviaries, we can sit back and admire this for hours. The best way to
keep lories and lorikeets is in suspended cages, to minimize mess and
for easy maintenance. Our birds seem to do well in the aviaries
mentioned without any problems.
FEEDING:
We feed all our birds a regular diet, with the seed eaters getting
fresh seed twice a week, and the nectar eaters getting my own formula
of lorikeet dry mix each and every day. Supplementary food is given
twice a week for the seed eaters, consisting of corn, apple, orange,
mixed beans, endive and spinach. The nectar eaters receive apple each
day, with orange, endive and spinach given once or twice a week. This
method has worked well for us over the past few years and I believe
that if you have found a good method that works for you then stick to
it without any changes.
MAINTENANCE:
At Donpaulna Aviaries
we believe in maintaining your setup so that it works in the most
efficient way possible. At Donpaulna
Aviaries
, cleaning of aviaries and gardens, preparation of
food, feeding of adult birds, checking on nest boxes etc, and
all the necessary jobs that need to be done, are done by myself and our
two sons Steven and Shannon. We believe if you have good organization,
then that makes keeping birds even more enjoyable.
CAGES FOR
LORIKEETS: These are the new set of Suspended cages I have
recently built to house my Lorikeets. They are three sets of four,
measuring 2.4m long x 0.9m high x 0.6m wide. There is a walkway in the
center of each bank where feeding, watering and nest
inspection is done. They are constructed from 20mm x 20mm galvanized
pipe, 25mm x 25mm semi heavy gauge wire, and have concrete floors. The
floors have 100mm of forest mulch spread on top for easy maintenance.
They are set up on 2 layers of bricks, and are 2m to the tops of the
roofing.
